Smokefree Barnsley has appointed a workplace advisor to support local businesses in the countdown to going smoke free by next summer. Smoke free legislation due to be introduced in England next summer will see virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces become completely smoke free.

Edward Fletcher will be working with local organisations over the coming months to help  them develop smoke free policies. He will be able to give up to date information on what is or isn’t included in the smoke free legislation. He will also be able to offer support to employees who are thinking of quitting before the smoking ban comes into force through the Barnsley NHS Stop Smoking service.

Edward’s first role will be to consult with local organisations on the draft regulations on smoke-free premises and vehicles, which were unveiled by Public Health Minister Caroline Flint this week.

The consultation  is wide-ranging and covers the finer details of how the smoke-free legislation will be implemented and enforced. Views are sought on issues such as exemptions and signage requirements for smoke free establishments.

The consultation period will run for 12 weeks, closing on 2 October. Those who wish to submit their views can email smokefreeregulations@dh.gsi.gov.uk or contact Edward Fletcher on 01226 775762.
