SMOKE FREE BARNSLEY – NO WHIFFS. NO BUTTS.

An event taking place on Wednesday, 9 March (National No Smoking Day) marks the significance of local employers making their commitment to a Smoke Free Barnsley.

Cllr John ‘Inky’ Thomson and Tom Sheard, Chairman of Barnsley Primary Care Trust, will officially launch the Smoke Free Barnsley campaign.

The Smoke Free Barnsley campaign encourages all workplaces across the borough, including factories, offices, pubs, restaurants and leisure facilities to make their premises smoke free.

A wide range of workplaces are pledging their commitment to supporting smoke free environments for their employees by creating no smoking policies to protect their staff from the dangers of second-hand smoke. These include Barnsley Interchange who go smoke free on 7th March and Barnsley Hospital Foundation Trust who go smoke free on April 1st. A substantial number of workplaces have already signed up to the campaign.

Jeremy Kemp, Centre Manager at Barnsley Interchange for the Transport Executive said: "We believe people should be able to wait for public transport in a comfortable, clean, smoke free environment and this is why we have introduced the no smoking zones at the Interchange."

Sarah McDonald of Smoke Free Barnsley said: “Becoming smoke free has already had a positive effect on health and business in many other cities throughout the world. We are delighted to have received such tremendous support from local employers. It reinforces Barnsley as a town that is committed to ensuring people can live, work and play without having to breathe tobacco smoke unless they want to.”

Tom Sheard, Chairman of Barnsley PCT and Fit for the Future, said: “The Smoke Free Barnsley campaign has already received strong backing from the partnership, and we’re delighted with the support it’s receiving from Barnsley people and businesses.

“We’re confident that the initiative will help improve the health and well-being of people throughout the borough.”

Cllr John ‘Inky’ Thomson said: “The decision to try and encourage Barnsley to become a smoke-free borough passed through Council virtually unopposed. We are all pulling in the same direction on this one, and this can only be good for the future health of Barnsley people.
